| Tunis is, as you probably know, the Capital of Tunisia. It is situated at the end of the Gulf of Tunis (of course !). With its 1 600 000 inhabitants suburbs included, it is the commercial and industrial (steel, phospahte) metropole of the country. It is served by the port of La Goulette and the Airport of El Aouina. Of punic origin, Tunis owes its prosperity to the Arab conquest at the end of 7th century, who made of it a great economical, religious and political center. Since 1979, Tunis is the headquarters of the Arab League. |
